Nutrition Tips For Toddlers

What children eat between weaned and starting school is important (1-5 years of age). Food habits are established in this phase of life. Young children's eating is mostly controlled by their mothers. There are five simple principles to help them. They are...

A) Give them to eat from each of the following four basic groups everyday.

1) Bread, other cereals and potatoes

2) Fruits and vegetables

3) Milk and dairy foods

4) Meat, Fish and alternatives

B) Aim for variety within each food group -- for example not always the same vegetable.

C) To minimise dental caries, sweets and other sugary foods should be rationed and not eaten between meals as a rule.

D) Give meat, chicken or fish regularly to prevent iron deficiency and also food that contains vitamin D ( like milk, eggs, cheese, butter, liver) would help a lot.

E) Foods containing fat or sugar (like cakes, chocolates, crisps, ice cream, etc.) are low in nutrition should be used sparingly or enjoyed as treats.
