In the first six months
- Young infants cannot deal properly with solid foods ( in reality semisolid foods at first) for the first four months.
- Introduction of any food to the baby, other than milk, is unnecessary before the age of 4 months. Breast milk is more nutritious.
- The natural time for starting solids is when the energy provided by well established breast feeding starts to become insufficient or when the infant still seems hungry after a good milk feed.
- When solids are introduced, single ingredient foods should be used and started one at a time at half weekly intervals so that there is time to recognise allergy or other intolerance to each food.
- Infant cereals are traditional foods to start with;rice is better before wheat. They can be thinned with baby's usual milk or water.
- Then different soft foods like soft porridges, pureed fruit and vegetables can be added.
- Egg should not be started before six months.
- Babies should not be left alone while they are eating.
